Established 1994

The United Resident Council (URC) is a 501(C)3 not-for-profit organization, owned and operated by the residents of public housing of the Housing Authority of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

URC and the HACFL's public housing program started their own Welfare-to-Work program in 1995, hiring residents as vacancy cleaners, housing inspectors, service aides, maintenance clerks, appliance helpers, receptionists, occupant specialists, and service coordinators.

The URC created a transportation service (URC Transit) in 1997 for the purpose of expanding residents' access to employment and services. URC Transit uses vans provided by the Housing Authority and the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County Transit. URC trains and hires residents as drivers and dispatchers. Transportation plays an important role in providing residents access to jobs, social services, interviews, critical services, and community activities.

The URC is continually seeking innovative ways to collaborate with the various social services agencies, businesses, churches, and educational institutions throughout Broward County.

Through a collaboration with the City of Fort Lauderdale and the HACFL, the URC was able to receive a grant for computers. The URC opened its first computer lab on February 20, 2000. The URC offers free computer classes every Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the Sunnyreach Acres community room at 1701 SW 2nd Street.

The URC's aim is renewing, reaching, and restoring communities.
